Update 5/31/25: Day 4 - Hong Kong Day 3

Psalm 135:15-18 "The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, the work of man's hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear, nor is there any breath at all in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, yes, everyone who trusts in them."

Saturday started off a little early. All of us felt jet lag today as we all woke up early and couldn't go back to sleep. We were thrilled to learn that we would actually be in China during the Dragon Boat Festival. The kids and I headed about a mile up the river to watch some races. We ended up watching the boat races for over an hour. It was fascinating to watch them work as a team and see the beautiful boats.

We stopped along the walking path and enjoyed some exercise equipment. The Chinese know how to be healthy and it is so encouraging to see people of all ages exercising!

A floating building on the river...

Shan and Joella decided to "surf the subway". They stood and tried to stay upright with the stops and take offs. They picked the bounciest spot where the cars joined.

After we watched the races, we met up with Harrison and Adelle to head to Lantau Island. Last time I was in Hong Kong, the cable cars were not operating because they were re-doing the cables, which meant we road a bus. Today, I wasn't as lucky. I had to ride the cable cars with the kids. I have to admit, I handled it rather well, even though I'm scared of heights. The views were beautiful, I just couldn't think about the little cable holding us up.

Everyone and their mother was out today to visit the island. Thankfully, the line moved really quickly.

Here we go...

First sight of the buddha.

Below us was a hiking path. I told the kids, next time I want to come and hike the path up to the buddha. It looks intense (like straight up these mountains), but it also looked beautiful!

Joella really struggled with visiting this spot. She didn't know why we would go to another temple and see more Buddhas. We processed and worked through it together. I told her my goal was for her heart to be more compassionate for those who have never received the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the end, she understood, but it still was not her favorite place to visit so far...although she did enjoy the cable car ride.

268 steps to the top. You walk around the base of the Buddha, which is 112 feet tall.

Tadpoles found at the top by the Buddha.

Shan purchased himself a really nice set of chopsticks as his souvenir.

This is carved out of an elephant tusk! It was gorgeous and so intricate.

Heading back down from the mountain. We literally flew through the clouds. Going down was a little more difficult on me since the wind picked up and rocked us. 👀

This worker went up in an open air cage. No thank you!!

The subway on our way home was packed! We were squeezed in pretty tight.

We finished the night off with bubble tea for dinner (Shan later grabbed some ramen). Now we are going to sleep so we are rested for church tomorrow.
